Dance as Research

The Five Elements:
Dance Movement and
Emotion Recognition
As a non-verbal physical movement, dance is one of the most direct and oldest forms of cultural expression in terms of emotion. When we focus on the two-way interaction between the dancer's body movement and the audience's aesthetic acceptance, we inevitably begin to think about the relationship between emotional expression and emotional acceptance.
The Five Elements Theory is one of the traditional Chinese philosophical ideas. The five elements are Metal、Wood、Water、Fire and Earth, each of which corresponds to five different emotions: Metal is sorrow、Wood is anger、Water is fear、Fire is joy、Earth is preoccupation. It is a new exploration and experiment to integrate Chinese Five-element Theory into the relationship between dance movement and emotion.
